Tour Details

Tarangire, home of the elephants, the highest concentration of wildlife outside Serengeti National Park, is a fun and easy park to explore. Wildlife is abundant and exposed due to the park’s more compact and open terrain. Lake Natron is the main breeding site for 2,5 million lesser flamingos. Fabulous flamingos shimmering amid the sun-scorched Kenyan border northeast of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this 58 km-long but just 50cm-deep alkaline lake should be on every adventurer’s itinerary.

Itinerary

Day 1Arusha – Tarangire National Park

You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Arusha at 8:00 am and driven to a very special national park. Tarangire is famous for its diverse landscape with nine different vegetation zones. The park is particularly known for the abundance of ancient baobab trees (the largest trees on the continent), which fill the landscape and dwarf the animals next to them.

The river of the park is full of wildlife ranging from a large variety of birds to lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, and, of course, elephants. In fact, the park has the largest concentration of elephants in the whole country and provides unique chances to observe the interaction between elephant families. The lunch area is fascinating, boasting an observatory with amazing views of the river and wildlife (with good chances of seeing a hunt while having your picnic).
In the afternoon, you will still do a game drive before heading to the lodge (around 5 pm to 6 pm is the return time).

Day 2Lake Natron Excursion

This day brings you a road trip through northern Tanzania to Lake Natron.

The drive can take up to 4 hours, and it’s the perfect way to see different sides of Tanzania’s ever-changing landscapes.
The occasional Maasai villages passed en route become dots in the distant scenery. The further north you reach, the more remains of old volcanoes rise around you. Among them is Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning ‘Mountain of God’ in the Maasai dialect. This volcano is one of the few that are still active. When you eventually reach Lake Natron, you might perhaps catch its smoke disappearing in the sky. On arrival, you will head to the local village, Ngare Sero, then hike to the waterfalls and bird watching. After a fun and memorable day and it’s time to get back to the lodge for dinner and rest for some hours before you work up at night to hike the mountain.

The hike usually starts at night, and depending on the weather, you’ll discuss with your guide at what time exactly you should start.

Day 3Flamingo Lake Walk – Road Trip back to Moshi

This morning, after checking out at the lodge around 11 a.m., you’ll put on your walking shoes as a Maasai tribesman guides you on a walk around the shores of Lake Natron in search of the lesser flamingo. Lake Natron is the most important and regular breeding site for lesser flamingos in East Africa, and during the breeding season, Lake Natron hosts up to 2.5 million flamingos.

The majority of egg-laying and hatching takes place from September to April although the peak occurs between October & (early) December. The long-legged waterfowl may flourish here, but to most other living creatures, including small birds, these conditions make survival extremely challenging; however, the Lake Flats do provide a variety of habitats for birds that flourish in the alkali oasis. Mid-morning is check-out time, and with a packed lunch, you begin the journey back to where it all started, back to Arusha; heart and camera filled with memories of your African safari adventure.
